Jo is an experienced corporate and commercial lawyer with more than 10 years’ experience advising clients on a range of matters.

Jo advises a broad variety of clients both in New Zealand and overseas, across multiple sectors including forestry, transport, healthcare, and technology. Her clients include Southern Cross Healthcare, Rangatira Investments, Next Capital, and OneFortyOne Plantations.

She specialises in helping clients with private company mergers and acquisitions (M&A), joint ventures and other shareholder arrangements (including private equity investments) and in advising on Overseas Investment Office (OIO) matters and consent applications. She regularly assists clients with general corporate matters including company administration, corporate governance, and drafting commercial arrangements. She also advises on securities law, including initial public offerings (IPOs), capital raisings, and compliance issues.

Jo’s forestry expertise includes advising on the $1.2 billion acquisition of Nelson Forests by OneFortyOne Plantations. Her health sector expertise includes advising Southern Cross Healthcare on a number of acquisitions and joint ventures, along with advising Rangatira on its acquisition of Boulcott Hospital from PEP. In the technology space, Jo has advised both investors and tech companies on various capital raisings and most recently has assisted the founder of The Mind Lab with the sale of a 50% interest.

Career highlights

Advising the founder and CEO of The Mind Lab, New Zealand’s leading online education institution and digital learning solutions provider, on the sale of a 50% interest to private equity firm Liverpool Partners/Inspire Impact.

Advising Rangatira Investments on its acquisition from PEP of the entities which own Boulcott Hospital, a private surgical hospital based in Lower Hutt.

Advising OneFortyOne Plantations on its $1.2 billion acquisition of Nelson Forests Limited. This was the largest New Zealand standalone transaction in 2018 and was a finalist for New Zealand Deal of the Year at the New Zealand Law Awards. Also advised OneFortyOne Plantations on its subsequent acquisition of Manuka Island forests.

Advising Go Bus Limited, owned by Ngāi Tahu Holdings and Tainui Group Holdings, on the sale of transport company Go Bus to Melbourne-based industry operator Kinetic, by sale of 100% of the shares in Go-Bus Holdings Limited.

Advising Westpac New Zealand on the sale of its wealth and financial advisory business to Forsyth Barr and formation of a strategic partnership between the parties.
