Richard is a commercial lawyer with particular expertise in technology, media and telecommunications law, intellectual property, commercial contracting and sport.
He advises clients on issues arising at all stages in the product lifecycle and is an expert legal draftsperson and troubleshooter. Richard is sought after to help establish new ventures and to commercialise new technology both in New Zealand and overseas.
As well as his technology practice, with a background in commercial and IP law, Richard is recognised as a leading Sports and Events lawyer by international research directory Chambers Asia-Pacific. He has broad experience working with event hosts, sponsors and stakeholders to deal with issues arising in relation to major events in New Zealand.

Advising on the terms of the media rights agreement with Amazon for the grant of exclusive rights to transmit and use audio visual coverage of the New Zealand Men’s and New Zealand Women’s International cricket matches played in New Zealand (or in any location where New Zealand is considered the home side) on multiple media platforms within India.
Crowdfunding platform for sports sector
Assisting a New Zealand crown entity in their negotiations for the development and operation of a crowdfunding platform specifically for the sports sector.
Various technology licencing arrangements
Advising a variety of clients on general technology licencing arrangements, research agreements and commercialisation of new technology. Richard also assists clients in understanding their contractual needs when working with supplier for the development of new technology and software.
Establishment of Mediation and Dispute Resolution Service for Sport and Recreation in New Zealand
Assisting Sport NZ in the RFP, contracting and negotiation of a new Sport and Recreation Complaints and Mediation Service (SRCMS) funded by Sport NZ and rolled out across New Zealand.
